Senate Democratic Leadership Works Behind the Scenes for So-Called "Card Check" Compromise

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

Senate Democrats under the leadership of Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) are scurrying behind the scenes to forge a falsely labeled "compromise" on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) legislation.  In particular the unions have increased their push for mandatory arbitration in S. 560. All Senate Republicans and Democrat Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) have publicly opposed the legislation.  A number of other moderate Democrats are still standing in the "undecided" column and thus remain key votes for both proponents and opponents of the legislation.  Senator Harkin has stated publicly that he intends to bring up the legislation for a vote in the Senate as soon as possible, even before the August recess. We fully anticipate little advance warning of an impending vote, which could come as early a mid-July on EFCA. This makes continued grassroots pressure from businesses very important.  We did a great job early on with this issue, and stalled it.  We must continue to vocally and forcefully speak out against EFCA (S. 560) because there is resurgence for a compromise that we can't live with.  The message to your Senators remains: Vote NO on cloture – cloture is the only vote that matters.  If cloture passes, Democrats will have little trouble garnering the 51 votes to pass the full bill.  Senator Sherrod Brown can be reached 614-469-2083 and Senator George Voinovich can be reached at 614-469-6779.

Colorado Firm Expands Recall of Beef Products Due To Possible E. coli O157:H7 Contamination

BS Swift Beef Company is voluntarily expanding its June 24 recall to include approximately 380,000 pounds of assorted beef primal products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.  The beef products were produced on April 21, 2009 and were distributed both nationally and internationally. A list of the products subject to the expanded recall can be found by visiting http://www.fsis.usda.gov/PDF/RC_034-2009_EXP.pdf.  Each box bears the establishment number "EST. 969" inside the USDA mark of inspection as well as the identifying package date of "042109" and a time stamp ranging from "0618" to "1130." However, these products were sent to establishments and retail stores nationwide for further processing and will likely not bear the establishment number "EST. 969" on products available for direct consumer purchase. The recalled products include intact cuts of beef, such as primals, sub-primals, or boxed beef typically used for steaks and roasts rather than ground beef.
