Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I apply for the ILF Summer Fellowship Program?

Undergraduate students in good academic standing at a junior college, college, or university are encouraged to apply by submitting a completed application received by February 1, 2010.

2. Can Freshman apply?

Yes, although the ILF accepts few Freshman applicants. We encourage students to apply after their freshman year.

3. When will I be notified whether or not I am accepted into the ILF Summer Fellowship Program?

The ILF Summer Fellowship Program is highly competitive.  Only applications received by February 1st will be considered.  Students will be notified of final acceptance by March 1st.

4. Once I am accepted into the ILF Summer Fellowship Program, do I have to attend an orientation session?

Yes, orientation for students accepted into the ILF Summer Fellowship Program is mandatory (unless the Fellow is still completing classes/exams).  Orientation is scheduled for Sunday, June 6, 2010. 

5. When do the internships start?

Summer 2010 internships will start on Monday, June 7, 2010. Later start dates can be arranged, but only when a student's academic schedule (classes/exams) conflicts with the start date. 

6.  When will I find out where I am interning for the summer as part of the ILF Summer Fellowship Program?

ILF arranges internships for students accepted into the ILF Summer Fellowship Program by coordinating with government officials to match students with internships based on their expressed interests.  Most Fellows will be informed of their specific assignment by the end of April.

7. Can I combine my ILF fellowship with other scholarships, or with a paying federal government intership I arrange on my own?

Yes, we encourage this.

8.  ILF provides a $1,500 stipend at the end of the internship.  Does ILF reimburse for housing and transportation costs? 

ILF does not reimburse for housing and transportation costs.  While students are ultimately responsible for finding housing, ILF will attempt to provide assistance where possible.  Past ILF Fellows have recommended the following housing options:

Housing in the DC metropolitan area can range from $1,000 – $2,500 for a 8-week stay.

9.  There are 3 airports in the DC metropolitan area.  Which one should I fly into?

The 3 airports in the DC metropolitan area are Reagan National in Virginia (closest to DC), Dulles Airport in Virgina, and Baltimore-Washington International in Maryland.  Visit www.wmata.com to plan your trip and for more information on how to get around.
