Ranma 1/2
Story and Art by Rumiko Takahashi

Ranma 1/2 is an action/comedy anime series that is what I think an ideal anime (at least, for me) should be.  The story and characters are so original and the Rumiko Takahashi's humor in this series is just so clever and so very often I find myself cracking up hysterically watching Ranma 1/2.

I love the personality and specialty of each character in this story, including Happosai's lust after girls' lingerie.  Ranma's male personality is so attractive and the female personality so adorable, I often find that he's too good for Akane.  :P  I adore Shampoo's sneakiness and her broken English, and I think she's the prettiest girl in the series.

I HIGHLY recommend this series.  It's one of the best anime out there.

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 4: Fighting Phobia

Kuno recruits Gosunkgui, who has a crush on Akane and is jealous of Ranma, to find out Ranma's weakness, and found out that Ranma is afraid of cats.  Gosunkgui then stages a kidnap and traps Ranma under the stage, which is filled with lots of cats and a tiger!  When Ranma's fear comes to its peak, Ranma yowls and thinks that he's a cat as a defense mechanism.  When this happens, Ranma gets in this mode in which he is uncontrollable and and the only known thing that would snap Ranma out of his condition is an old woman who lived in their neighborhood.  Akane proved to be another person who could calm him down when Ranma hopped on her lap and kissed her!

Shampoo's great grandmother, Cologne, appears and demands that Ranma marries Shampoo, sneakily uses Ranma deadly pressure, which makes him not toerable to hot water anymore.  The nearsighted Mousse appears, also, challenging Ranma because he is in love with Shampoo.  The bet is that if Mousse wins, he gets Akane.  Unable to change back to a guy, Ranma shows up to the challenge as a girl dresed up in guy's clothes with lots of magic tricks.  Ranma turned back to a guy because he couldn't defeat Mousse while he's a girl.  But the pressure point only works only once, and he was soon changed back to a girl again after he won the fight.

Determined to master "Chestnuts Roasting on Open Fire" so that he can get the Phoenix pill from Cologne to fix his "problem", Ranma worked at the Cat Cafe for Cologne.  At a fair, Ranma used the fish game to practice on his speed and mastered "Chestnuts Roasting on Open Fire".  Continuing on, Ranma tries to win the War of the Melons so he could get the prize (Shampoo with phoenix pill included.).  Near the finishline, Ranma was confronted by Cologne and start a fight.  Akane got in the middle while she tries to save Ranma and Cologne wants to use the chance to get rid of Akane. - Ed. 2

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 5: Survivor Type

The battle at the end of Volume 4 finishes with Ranma defeating Cologne using Cat-Fist with Shampoo's help.  Next, Cologne teaches Ryoga the Secret Breaking Point Technique, with which Ranma had difficulty defeating unti he figured to use his fast punches.

Sentaro of Daimonji Schol of Martial Arts Tea Ceremonies tricks the female Ranma into marrying him so that he could nullify a prearranged marriage with Miss Satsuki, the daughter of the Miyakoji School of Martial Arts Tea Ceremonies, who was also crowned as Miss Tea Ceremony for 1993.  Hearing that Miss Satsuki is a master at martial arts, Ranma can't resist the temptation to beat her at the arts. The tea ceremony martial arts happens to be the ability to glide on the floor while sitting down at a very fast speed.  When Ranma and Akane found out that Sentaro couldn't find himself to like Miss Satsuki because she was a monkey, Ranma backed out of the fight.  Instead of helping Ranma, Senta let Ranma and the monkey wound each other and Plans to marry Akane,  In the midst of the fight, a girl appears and admitted that she was the real Miss Satsuki and that she sent her money in her place at the wedding because she was too embarrassed.

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 9:

The fight at the Chinese Acrobat continues as Mousse attempts to turn Akane into a duck.  At Mousse's defeat, Akane plans a way to help Mousse to get Shampoo - by having Mousse challenge Ranma again and make Ranma lose.  Shampoo agrees that Mousses wins, she woud date Mousse. As Mousse gets realy beat up by Ranma, Shampoo was touched by Mousses' effort and takes Mousses to her bosom.

A mailbox-impersonating rival named Tsubasa Kurenai comes after Ranma for Ukyo.  At lunch time Ranma and Ukyo sells Ucchan's okonomiyaki to see who's the cuter girl of the two.  Tsubasa falls in love with Ranma as he comforts her after Ukyo rejected her, even though she was deemed the cuter girl.  Ranma goes on a date with Tsubasa as a boy, wanting to set Tsubasa on the "right path", only to find out that Tsubasa is a boy, himself.

Upon finding out that his dog just had some babies and wanted him to go home, Ryoga decides to go home.  Since Akanes loves puppies, she asked Ryoga is she could go see the puppies at his house.  At Ryoga's house, Ranma changes into a girl and fools Ryogo into thinking that she's his forgotten sister, Yoiko.

Happosai gets sick of his abuse from the family and threatend with his ultimate technique, The Happo-Fire Burst, only to find out that he has forgotten it.  The three males in the family attempts to get the scroll that sealed away the ultimate technique before Happosai does only to findout that it's right in the center of a women's hot springs.  When they got it, no one, even Happosai himself, can't read his terrible handwriting.  With a little reminder from Ranma, the ultimate technique is really just fireworks.  The volume ended with a beautiful firework blasting Happosai away.  -Ed. 1

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 11:

Shampoo has this waterproof soap that when used, it prevents changes.  Ryoga gets it by mistake without knowing and doesn't get affected by cold water anymore.  Once Ranma realize the effect of the soap, he and Shampoo team up and try to get the soap from Ryoga.  They set Ryoga and Akane on a date to distract Ryoga from the soap, to find out in the end that the soap has a big flaw - it washes right off.

Happosai burns Ranma with the legendary moxibustion which turns Ranma into a weakling.  Happosai spreads the word that Ranma is weak so all Ranma's enemies find out about it and take this opportunity to beat Ranma, except for Ryoga, who actually saves Ranma because he hate picking on the weak.  Ranma, Genma, Ukyo, and Cologne set out to find the cure for moxibustion and Cologne decides that the Heaven Blast of the Dragon might help Ranma in this case.  The stronger the opponent, the better result the Heaven Blast of the Dragon.  Since everyone would hold back fighting Ranma because they care for Ranma, Ryoga is nominated to play the role to help Ranma's training.  - Ed. 1

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 15:

At the school cafeteria, Picolet Chardin II of the Law Belle France School of Martial Arts, uses his martial arts eating skill to eat everyone's food without their notice until it's too late.  It happens that Soun Tendo had traded on of his future daughters to the Chardin family for a meal a long time ago, and Picolet now wants to collect one of Tendo's daughters for marriage.  Wanting to master martial arts eating, Ranma volunteers himself as Picolet's fiancee to learn the secrets of the art.  Starved from not being fast enough to eat, Ranma discovers that the only way to defeat martial art eating is the long lost Parlay du Foie Gras.  This volume was an eye candy because Ranma got to wear an iron corset with many different fashionable ball gowns, which were so pretty!  I also found it hilarious the way Picolet "kisses" Rama!

The second part of the volume starts with a fight between Nabiki and Akane.  When Rama saved Nabiki from a fall, Akane got so jealous that she asked the two why notj just engaged.  Nabiki took what Akane serious and took Ranma in as her fiance.  Various incidents made Akane even more jealous and it became harder and harder for each of them to apologize to each other.  Nabiki, in a jest, told Ranma that she has always been in love with him.  When Ranma found out that Nabiki was just joking, he wanted revenged and asked Nabiki to a date (in hell, of course! without Nabiki's knowing.)  Nabiki cleverly told Akane that Ranma wanted a date with her instead, which leads to some unexpected expectations. (I missed the last couple of pages, DRATS!  Missed some important convos, I think.) - Ed. 1

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 17:

Ranma receives a challenge letter from Kuno but when he sees Kuno, Kuno indeed has mastered a sword technique, but has lost his memory.  To help Kuno get his memory back, Ranma finds out that Kuno must have had gone to the Watermelon Island for training.  Kuno got his memory back when he hit himself in the head, but the price to pay was that he doesn't remember the special sword techniques anymore.

Ukyo opens up a jar of sauce that was made 10 years ago but the sauce tasted foul.  Ranma remember that 10 years ago he spilled Ukyo's sauce and remade the sauce, that's why the sauce was a failure.  Feeling guilty, Ranma becomes really nice to Ukyo and even complimented the sauce.  Ukyo misinterpretes Ranma's action thinking back the promise that Ranma made 10 years ago when he said that he would take care of Ukyo for the rest of his life if the sauce turns out good.  Touched by Ranma, Ukyo vows to be just a woman and moves into Ranma's room to be a good wife.  Wanting Ukyo to move out, Akane and Ranma pretends to be married already and put on a show.  Proven the scheme useless, Ranma then tries to be a bad guy, hoping Ukyo would hate him.  In the end, Ukyo proves that she can't be just a woman and leaves to train as both a woman and okonomiyaki chef.

The town is terrorized by an octopus trap which steals food from restaurants.  Soun and Genma find out that it's Happosai in the trap and avoid to catch it.  Happosai, feeling lonely, cries to Ranma and once the town realize that dojo people have something to do with the octopus trap, they are outcasted.

Hikaru Gosukugi buys some paper dolls that when stick to a person's back, he would do whatever what's written on the paper doll.  Meaning to use them to get Akane to date him, Gosukugi ends up wasting them in various funny ways.

Happosai feeds Ranma and himself an "obedience pill" intending to have Ranma do what he says.  However, the pills have very strong magnetic attraction when swallowed, so Happosai is stuck on Ranma.  The only way to separate the two is to have the disciple defeat his master in battle and Ranma defeats him by showing him guys changing in the guy's locker room -Ed. 1

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 20:

Ranma helps Akane defeats Mariko at Martial Arts Cheerleading, and everyone thinks that Ranma really loves Akane when he said that many times to Akane when she was disguised as a fencer.  Mariko, upon defeat, leaves Kuno, and moves on with her life.

Everyone at the Tendo Dojo finds out that the reason Genma hasn't took Ranma back to see his mother because Genma made a vow that unless he raises Ranma as a manly man, he and Ranma both will Seppuku, the Japanese suicide ritual.  Since Ranma turns into a girl when cold water hits him, Genma cannot face Ranma's mother, in fear of having to commit suicide.  When Nadoka Saotome, Ranma's mother, announces that she's coming to see Genma and her son, Genma and Ranma ends up having to appear in their alternate form.  Akane wants to help Nadoka see her son, but with various happenings, Ranma managed to save Nadoka from an accident and she saw a glimpse of Ranma in his male form, but when she's conscious, Ranma is back to a girl.

Shampoo puts on a brooch from Cologne's stash and suddenly hates Ranma.  Determined to get Shampoo to love him again, Ranma gets out to win her heart back.  It turns out that when the pin is worn in the correct way, love will flow, if it's worn in the wrong way, love will turn into hate.  Cologne uses this opportunity to get Ranma to declare his love to Shampoo to trap him into marrying her.

Happosai steals a lot of girls' lingerie from a building but they would all turn into paper, and it's driving Happosai mad.  It turns out that years ago, there was a girls' dorm and Happosai used to steal the girls' lingerie and leaeves the headmistress' big brief.  The headmistress became bitter and placed a curse that the thief will die, unless someone steals her underwear, too.  In order to save Happosai's life, Ranma tries to trick Happosai into stealing the headmistress' underwear. - Ed. 2

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 21:

Pantyhose Taro, who was bathed at birth in the springs where a yeti riding an ox while carrying an el and a crane drowned, returns with water from Jusenkyo that is intended to turn Happosai into a pious man.  Armed with a secret weapon, Pantyhose Taro wants Happosai to rename him after his defeat.  Every person in Tendo dojo is happy about this until a phone call from the guide at Jesenkyo springs informs them that the water Pantyhose Taro has really change a person into twins instead of pious.  Knowing this, Ranma has to try to save Happosai from Pantyhose Taro.  The secret weapon Pantyhose Taro has is that when he touches water, he now becomes part octopus, also.

Ranma was found by Yohyo on the beach of an island after falling into the ocean during practice with Genma.  Yohyo is recruiting all females seeking to find his love, a girl who left a footprint on the back of his head.  Ranma's foot turns out to match the footprint on Yohyo's head.  Ranma finds out that there is no hot water on this island because a boulder is blocking the source, so Ranma breaks the boulder and is changed back into a guy, and to show Yohyo that he's a guy.

Nadako Saotome comes to visit Tendo dojo and Genma and Ranma changes to their alternative form because if she found out that Ranma is not a man, they'd be forced to commit suicide.  Kasumi is sick and can't cook, so Nadako decides to teach Akane and female Ranma how to cook.

Ryoga buys a fishing pole of love wanting to reel in Akane.  By accident, Ryoga reels Ranma in, instead, and Ranma falls in love with Ryoga.  Ranma then views Akane as his rival, and the whole time Akane thinks that Ranma and Ryoga like each other.  This short chapter is really funny; the way Ranma was drawn in love with Ryoga is hilarious.

Hikaru Gosunkugi, wanting to be as strong as Ranma, buys an One-Punch armor.  The armor is set up in a silly way that unless the wearer punches the person who he really hates, he can't take the armor off.  The wears also needs to make the punch within 5 minutes or the armor would exclode.  Ranma, chained to Hikaru, refuses to be punched and both end up blown up by the armor.

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 23:

The volume starts with female Ranma and Herb in the middle of a battle for a treasure that looks like a teapot, with Ryoga and Mousse on his side.  Ranma ends up defeating and saving Herb's life by using Dragon's Descending Crashing Wave.  He was also turned back to a guy.  When Ranma returns home with Ryoga and Mousse, Akane hugs Ranma really tight to welcome home.  Isn't that sweet of Akane?

The next story introduces a new character, Hinako Ninomiya, a new teacher that the principal hired trying to teach Ranma a lesson.  Hinako turns out to look like a little girl but she drains battle aura from delinquents to defeat them, and in turn she turns into a sexy adult female.  Finding out that what she uses is from the school of anything goes, Ranma wants to find out more about this arts, and spends lots of time with the teacher.  Meanwhile, Shampoo, Ukyo, Kodachi, and Akane think that Ranma is having an affair with the teacher, and all except Akane want to attack Hinako.  Hipposai tells Ranma that he was the one who taught Hinako the special draining skill and tells Ranma about the pressure points to remove that skill from her.  During gym class, the three girls and Ranma separately stages ways to defeat Hinako.  When Ranma finally did, Hipposai reveals that the procedure needs to be repeated everyday for the next month in order to cure her draining ability.

The next story is one that Akane travels to Higo Forest, on the banks of Ryugenzawa. to handle the strange beast that has been sighted.  Akane remember that she was there when she was little and there, she received a horn pipe from a boy.  Akane left alone and Ranma was sent by Soun to find her.  Once Akane was there, she was saved from a monster by a guy who she remembers as being the same boy that saved her from a monster when she was little.  The boy, Shinnosuke, endured injury because of the incident.  Akane and Shinnosuke to where he lives and learns that Shinnosuke lives there with his grandfather, and the two are the guardians of the forest; it is their dity to battle the weird monsters.  When Ranma arrives in the forest himself, he sees many creatures that are gigantic in size, and wants to find Akane as soon as possible. - Ed. 2

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 24: Persistence of Memory

This is the most "romantic" volume of Ranma 1/2 I've read.  The expressions of Akane and Ranma's faces are softer and it's the first time that Ranma shows his feelings for Akane.  Ranma is awesome.  I don't see why so many guys like Akane so much.  I think Ranma deserves better than Akane. :P

Ranma follows Akane to Ryugenzawa and finds her with Shinnosuke and his grandfather.  Shinnosuke is a boy Akane remembers from childhood.  In Akane's defense, he received wounds and has only short-term memory due to the wounds.  He needs Ryugenzawa's magical water to stay alive.  Akane is determined to stay and help.  Rejected by Akane to go home, Ranma thinks that Akane would rather be with Shinnosuke than him.  Even P-chan thinks that Akane is in love with Shinnosuke.  Not wanting Akane to get hurt, Ranma and Ryoga stays to help defeat Yamata No Orochi, an eight-headed dragon like creature.  Dressed like girls and armed with wines (orochi's favorite), the group teams up and takes on the orochi.  Oh, and of course, once Shinnosuke's saved, Akane returns to Ranma.  - Ed. 2

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 25: Alter Egos

It is time for home visits and Miss Hinako visits the Tendo residence.  Soun meets the little Hinako and thinks that she's Akane's friend from school.  Seeing Souns is so nice, Miss Hinako falls in love with Soun.  Miss Hinako moves into the Tendo Dojo and acts like a mother to the three sisters, intending to marry Soun.

Mousse accidentally finds a pair of spectacles from Cologne that when worn, it makes the opponent cry and apologize. Mousses uses it on Ranma and humiliates him in front of everyone.  Cologne informs everyone that the spectacles were really designed for the coward, children, and women.  Not wanting to stoop so low and turn Shampoo off, Mousse uses the spectacles another way during Ranma's challenge to get his pride back.

At the beach, the Tendo Dojo members were warned that there is a demon dog in the ocean, and it only attacks girls.  Ranma changes into his girl form and finds a shrine at the bottom of the ocean.  Before he knew it, he was stuck in an ugly demon swimsuit.  The swimsuit says that unless Natsuhiko compliments the swimsuit by sunset the next day, the suit will drag Ranma back into the ocean.  The swimsuit refuses to recognize the real Natsuhiko because he looks different now (he's aged!) but it turns out that Kuno looks like him.  It's all up to Kuno to save Ranma from being drowned in the ocean.

Ukyo reads about this Cursed Cave of Broken Loves and is determined to get Ranma and Akane to go through it. Once there, Ryoga shows up and Ukyo lets him in on the scheme.  The four of them go in and the Ryoga and Ukyo tries to get Ranma and Akane to go as a couple.  But with their frequent arguing, Akane wants to walk with Ryoga.

The principal comes up with a plan to expose everyone's bad exam grades by placing the exams in the hot air balloon which will blow up at noon, unless someone can get a square thing from him. -Ed. 2

When Shampoo was little, Pink and Link were beat up a lot by Shampoo because the pranksters twins played a trick on Shampoo.  Now that the twins heard from the "Amazons Clan Monthly" that Shampoo and Ranma are married, they come to Tokyo to seek revenge with Shampoo AND Ranma.  The twins use poison to trap Shampoo and lure Ranma to rescue her.  Cologne arms Ranma with Poison-Crushing Shield and Poison-Slicing Sword to face the poisonous twins.  Upon defeat, Cologne gives Akane Flame-Throwing Staff and the Fan of Divine Wind, and Protective Transfer Amulet to rescue Ranma and Shampoo.  With too much pollen in the air, even the twins were trapped.  Even when Shampoo is asleep, she is able to beat the twins up.  It's up to Ranma to rescue all four girls.

1,000 years ago, A monkey priest battled an evil demon and sealed it in a box.  Before a new magical seal could be placed on the worn seal, the demon escapes and causes people to act wickedly.  The way to make demon leave a person is by punching the inflicted person.  The demon attached itself to Genma, Kuno, Ryoga, and finally landed on Kasumi.  No one is willing to punch Kasumi, until the priest suggested to put a magical seal on Kasumi's forehoead to repel it.

Nabiki is challenged by Kinnosuke Kasha-o in the "art of living" based on never using one yen of one's own money.  Kinnosuke racked up a lot of debt and rendered Tendo's dojo broke.  Nabiki, not admitting defeat, challenged Kinnosuke on a one-day match that whoever spends the 10 yen of their own money will pay for everything plus the debt that Kinnosuke placed on the Tendo dojo.  -Ed.2

Ranma 1/2 - Volume 28: The Pig Within

Akari Unryu, a breeder of pigs, falls in love with Ryoga when Ryoga defeats her champion wresting-pig, Katsunishiki, 14th Yokozuna of Pigdom.  Seeing that Akari really likes Ryoga, Ranma determines to make sure Ryoga knows about it.  Cologne gives "Embrace of Passionate Love" incense to Ranma to help Ryoga accept Akari's love - whoever says the word "pig" would be loved by Ryoga.  Thinking that Ryoga hates pigs, pig lover Akari tries to condition herself to hate pigs, also, to please Ryoga.  When Akari finds out that Ryoga turns into a pig, she's even more convinced that Ryoga is the man for her.  Everything seems to work out for the new couple until female Ranma said the word "pig", and Akari leaves, not able to bear that Ryoga loves another girl.
