XXXHOLic
By: CLAMP

XXXHOLic is one of the newest mangas by CLAMP.  It's very different from the other CLAMP works that I know of.  I am very impressed that CLAMP can draw so different manga series with styles.  The style for XXXHOLic is notable; it contains a lot of black, I suppose it's meant to go with the theme of the manga.  The bodies of the characters seem stretched long and thin, which you don't really notice unless you take a good look at the proportions.  The heads are too small proportionwise, yet they seem perfectly fine when you read through the manga.

Another thing I noticed about the drawings is that they seem to be very simple and easy to draw.  The clothes of the characters don't have all the details like in other mangas.  It's like the outline of the characters' body are drawn first, and then the clothes were drawn within the border of the outline to fill in the space.  Also, CLAMP elimiated some details, too, such as drawing a circular shape from the wrists of the characters to resemble fists.

Since details are not the forte of this serires, I have a little mixed feeling about it.  One one hand, I think it's clever to draw in such way because the result is pretty good.  But, on the other hand, I wonder if it was just an attempt of CLAMP to make it easier for them.  Maybe it's not as easy as it seems, as the series has a lot of eerie spiritual clouds/smoke which might take some effor to draw. Either way, I enjoy this series very much.

The theme for this series involves the supernatural and sixth sense.  The heroine of this story is Yuko Ichihara is a witch who grants wishes for her customers but expect payments in different forms.  Kimihiro Watanuki is a boy who can see spirits.  Yuko plays a role that helps Watanuki in his "transformation".

With the travelers gone, Yuko takes Watanuki to see a fortune teller to get his fortunes told.  First they sees a fake fortune teller, then they sees the real that Yuko goes to see her own fortunes told.  The fortune tells tells Watanuki that his symbol is a butterfly and he's due for a transformation, and that he will find that he'll be spending more time with a friend who he always get into arguments with.

Yuko declares that the hot summer day is a perfect time for A Hundred Ghost Stories Night, and she picked Domeki's temple to hold the ceremony.  To get Watanuki and Himawari together, Himawari was invited to the ceremony, too.  For the ceremony, the four of them took turns telling ghost stories.  At one point, the spirits that came toward them was so overpowering that Yuko told Domeki to use a bow, absent arrows, to defeat the spirits.  It's revealed that Domeki and Watanuki will be working together a lot as Watanuki attracts spirits and Domeki would would exorcise them.
