Fruits Basket - Volume 1 (Chapter 1 - 6)

Tohru Honda is under the custody of her grandpa after her mother's recent death, but her grandpa's house went under renovation and Tohru was asked to live with her family.  Not wanting her best friends to worry about her, she lives by herself in a tent on the property of Sohma family.  Wandered upon a Sohma's house, Tohru meets Shigure and Yuki Sohma.  Yuki is a student at her school so they end up walking to school together, and caused the other students' curiosity.

Seeing that Tohru had no place to stay, the Sohmas takes Tohru in to live with them.  While there, Kyo appears, and that's when Tohru discovers a secret about the Sohma family - each family member is possessed by the vengeful spirit of an animal from the Chinese Zodiac, and whenever one of them becomes weak or is hugged by a person of the opposite sex, they change into their Zodiac animal.  Tohru quickly discovers that Kyo is the cat, Yuki is the rat, and Shigure is the dog, and as the old Zodiac story goes, Kyo and Yuki don't get along, with Kyo always wanting to beat Yuki so he can be accepted as part of Sohma family.   Tohru promises to keep this secret and stays at the Sohma house.  With Tohru's optimistic attitudes, she takes good care of the guys at the house.

Kyo is told to register as a new student at Yuki and Tohru's school, and he becomes popular like Yuki, except he has a temper and doesn't really know how to get along with people.  Tohru believes that deep inside, Kyo is really a nice guy.  As Tohru gets to know more about the guys, she meets Kagura, who turns out to the pig.  Kagura has a major crush on Kyo and shows her affection for him by hitting him.

Suddenly one day Tohru receives a call from her grandpa saying that the house is done and she is to return to his house.  Once there, Tohru realizes that she wants to go back to the Sohmas and the Sohmas realize that they want Tohru back.  Kyo and Yuki arrive to grandpa's house and takes Tohru "home".

Fruits Basket - Volume 2 (Chapter 7 - 12)

Tohru's two best friends, Hanajima and Arisa decide to inspect Sohma's house to make sure that Tohru is under good care.  With the girls coming, Sohmas have to be careful not to expose their secret to the girls.  Seeing that the Sohmas understand and appreciate how innocent and good hearted Tohru is, the two girls approves the living arrangement and entrusts Tohru to the Sohmas.

At school, it's time for the culture fest, and Tohru and her classmates made rice balls to sell.  The girls in the class gave Yuki a dress to wear because they think he's very pretty, and Yuki puts it on even though he is very insecure about his good looks.

The next two Sohmas Tohru meets are Momiji and Hatori.  Momiji (the rabbit) is half-Japanese and half-German, and is the youngest Sohma in the family.  Hatori is the family doctor for the Sohmas, and he doesn't seem as friendly as the other Sohmas.  Yuki tells Tohru that Hatori would suppress the memories of people who finds out about the secret, and warns her that she should not be alone with her.  To Tohru's surprise, Hatori privately invites Tohru to the Sohma Estate to speak with him.

Tohru goes to the Sohma Estate without the others in the house knowing.  There, Hatori warns Tohru to stay away from the Sohmas, and Tohru finds out from Mimijo that Hatori was punished by the head of the Sohma family, Akito, who caused Hatori to lose his eyesight in his left eye.

It is time for New Year's banquet at Sohma's Estate, but the Sohmas don't want to leave Tohru alone in the house.  Under Tohru's convincing, all the guys decide to go back home for the banquet.  One the way home, both Yuki and Kyo decide that they don't want to go home after all (because they both keep on thinking abuot Tohru), and returns back to their house and finds Tohru crying.  The banquet went on without the two guys, who preferred to spend the time with Tohru, instead.

Tohru runs into Hatori and finds out that he's  the dragon (seahorse).  While he was knocked out by Tohru, he thought of his ex-girlfriend Hana,  who found out about his secret and whose memories were suppressed.  The next time Hatori sees Hana, she was engaged to some guy and doesn't remember Hatori at all.  When Hatori wakes up, he finds the same gentleness that he saw in Hana in Tohru.

Fruits Basket - Volume 3 (Chapter 13 - 18)

The day before the endurance run at school, Yuki got sick with fever.  Kyo, who views the race as a chance to beat Yuki, refuses to let Yuki stay at home from school.  A new Sohma, Hatsuharu, arrives at Tohru's school during their race and seeks to challenge Kyo.

With some arguing, Kyo brings out the "Black Haru", but Haru still proves to be the weaker one of the two.  During the battle, Yuki collapses due to his illness and Haru uses Tohru to turn into a cow and carries Yuki home.  While Yuki is in bed unconscious, Haru tells Tohru that Yuki was his first love, and that he wonders if Yuki has softens up because of Tohru.

On Valentine's day, all the girls at school give chocolate to the guys that theylike.  Kyo tries to hide from Kagura but it was too late.  Kagura asks Kyo to be on a date and Shigure suggests that Tohru and Yuki to go, also, and double date.  With some resistance, Kyo finally agrees to go on the double date.

The four goes on the date while Shigure visits Sohma's main house to deliver chocolates to Hatori and Akito for Tohru.  Hatori accuses Shigure and Akito of using Tohru for their selfish reasons and Shigure doesn't deny it and says he'll keep Akito's dream alive forever.  When the date ends, the four finds Shigure's editor at the house begging Shigure to do his work.

The date after White Day, the Sohma's find out that Tohru used her earnings to buy chocolates for everyone on Valentine's Day.  Momiji invites Tohru to go to the hot springs as a gift for the White Day, and decides that Yuki and Kyo are going, too. Momiji describes how cheerful Tohru always is and is lucky in that way.

The day of the hot springs arrives and the group arrives there with a ghostly hostess' greetings.  Tohru enjoys the bath with her mother's picture and after played ping-pong with the guys.  Yuki gives a ribbon for hair to Tohru as a gift for White Day.  The volume ends with Momiji announcing to the group that he and Haru, who are in the same year as he is, will be joining the other three at their school in the coming Spring.

Fruits Basket - Volume 4 (Chapter 19 - 24)

It's Spring semester and Momi and Hatsu join the other ones at school.  The Student Body President shows up and harrasses the Sohma group, but only succeeds in bringing the "black" side of Hatsu, who scared him away.  With all the commotion, Akito shows up at school.

Akito approaches Tohru to say "hi" when she's alone and Yuki walks in on them.  Akito and Yuki have a private conversation which makes Yuki seem scared.  When Tohru sees that, she jumps in and saves Yuki from Akito.  The group, including Harajima and Arisa, plays badmington after school for fun, and all fear disappears when they are having fun together.

While Yuki and Tohru are outside gardening, Tohru sees some clothes on the ground, and when she approches it, she feels something in her dress. It turns out to be a snake, who is another Sohma, and Yuki's older brother, Ayame.  Ayame takes Tohru out for lunch and tells Tohru about Yuki and his relationship, which isn't "close", but he wishes that he can get Yuki to find out more about himself.

Hatsu and Momi tell Tohru that Ayame owns a costume store.  Aaya and Shigure reminisce about their high school days, and Aaya tells his stories of how he got to keep his hair long in school even though it's against the rules.  Aaya tells more stories about him and suddenly Hatori appears (thanks to Haru) to take Aaya back with him, as Aaya only listens to Hatori, alone.

It's the anniversary of Tohru's mother's death on May 1st and Tohru's best friends, Yuki, and Kyo all want to go with Tohru to the grave.   At work, Momi tells Tohru about his mother, who has her memory suppressed so she wouldn't remember Momi.  She had a hard time accepting Momi as her son because of the curse.  Momi only wishes that the mother will one day remember him.

Tohru and the others go to her mother's grave and we find out that Tohru's father died of pneumonia when she was little.  Hanajima sets up a picnic and the group has eat food in front of the grave, the way Tohru's mother would have wanted it.  Arista senses strong waves from Kyo and it freaks Kyo out.  Back at home, Kyo finds Tohru sleeping on the floor and he bends down really close to her and wonders what the feelings he has are.

Fruits Basket - Volume 5 (Chapter 25 - 30)

Tohru and the four Sohma guys.  While there, both Yuki and Kyo act weird around Tohru, making her feel like they are mad at her so she apologized.  In an accident, Tohru turned both of them into their animal form and the two start to fight, which makes Tohru happy because things are back to normal.

Before Tohru, Yuki and Kyo head out to the lake, Ayame appears.  After the three left for the lake, the Mabudachi trio sat down to chat.  Ayame places pictures of Kana's wedding in front of Hatori, letting him decide whether he wants to see the pictures or not.  Ayame also says that he saw Mayu, who used to date Shigure.  And we learn that Mayu is actually a teacher of Tohru at her school.

When the group returns to the Sohma home, they see Hatsuharu with a baby tiger, who bit Tohru.  Hatsu says that the tiger, Kisa, went missing and he just found her.  Kisa lost her ability to speak due to some unknown psychological reasons.  Kisa's mother comes and Tohru helps her coax Kisa into feeling better, and Kisa follows Tohru everywhere after that.

Momi tells the group that the kids were teasing Kisa because of her hair and eye colors, and then they start to ignore Kisa.  Momi empathizes how difficult it is to go through something like that.  The group receives a letter from Kisa's teacher telling her to like herself.  Yuki and Hatsuharu encourages Kisa to like herself, and finally she speaks.  Kisa finally returns to school to try to be her best.

Hanajima converses with the annoying girls at school and agrees for them to visit her house.  The truth is that the Yuri Fan Club is on a mission to exterminate Tohru, but Hanajima is in the way, so they are trying to find Hanajima's weakness.  In fact, Hanajima can sense something, and that's why she allows the girls to go to her house. Inside her closet, the Yuri Fan Club members find Megumi, Hanajima's little brother.  The girls were so freaked out that they revealed their purpoes, but were only be told off by Hanajima, and possibly cursed by Megumi.

Tohru receives a red mark on one of her tests and needs to take an make-up exam.  She feels so terrible about failing her mother that she gets a fever.  While she's sick, Shigure takes care of her, Momi takes over Tohru's work, Kyo cooks for Tohru.  Yuki hepls Tohru with her studying.  Tohru is just so happy to have them around.

It's a rainy June day and Kyo feels sick because he doesn't agree with rain.  Megumi shows up at their house and forces a date on him.  Shigure suggests that Yuki and Tohru go on a date.  When they return, they see a man in front of their house, who turns out to be Kyo's shishou, Kazuma.

Kazuma is welcomed to the house and Tohru is introduced to him.  Kyo has to hold his emotions while Yuki is around.  It wasn't until he retires to his room and Kazuma follows him that Kyo expresses his joy of his shishou's return. Kyo wants to go live with Kazuma, but Kazuma thinks that Kyo should stay with the Sohmas because Tohru would "heal" him.  Kazuma confronts Kyo with his fear that he's afraid of losing Tohru once she finds out Kyo's secret.  Just as Tohru approaches them, something happens to Kyo.

Kyo turns into his disgusting "true form" and runs away.  Tohru feels sick about his sight, but approached Kyo anyway.  Kyo injures Tohru and threatens her.  When Kyo's little, his mother told him that she loves him but wouldn't let him go outside and Kyo feels hurt that his mother never acknowledge his true self.  Tohru hangs onto Kyo and wants to stay together with him no matter what.  Kyo turns back to his human form and hugs Tohru, which then turns him into a cat that is embraced by Tohru's arms.

Kazuma's grandfather used to be the cat before Kyo.  His grandfather was outcasted by his own family, including Kazuma, until he died.  Feeling guilty, Kazuma takes Kyo in and treated him like his child.  When Kyo wakes up, Tohru already took Kazuma home.  He tells Thoru why he took the beads from Kyo so he turns into his true form and thanks Tohru for healing Kyo.  Kyo shows up and was angry at Kazuma for not saying good bye.  They exchanged some punches but in the end they both acknowledged their close relationship as father-son.

Kyo starts going to Kazuma's house 3 times a day and at Sohma's house, Kyo and Yuki continues their daily spats.  Tohru and Haru both sense that Yuki seems depressed lately.  Haru talks to Yuki about it but Yuki keeps quiet.  Yuki tells Tohu how much she has helped him since she came to their house and he has plans to make memories with her this summer.  Haru goes home with the other Sohmas and Kagura shows up and forces Kyo to go to their shishou's house.

Yuki and Tohru visit Aaya's shop and are greeted by Mine, Aaya's seamstress.  Aaya explains to the two about his business, selling dresses to mainly men "men's romance".  Mine takes Tohru to get dressed up and also to give the brothers a chance to talk.  Aaya expresses that he is sorry for not being there for Yuki while he was younger, but he realizes that Yukis is precious.  Tohru gets dressed in a cute dress and Yuki loves it and was glad that they came to see Aaya's shop, even though he doesn't agree with him.

Fruits Basket - Volume 7 (Chapter 37 - 42)

Kisa has been spending a lot of time with Tohru and Hiro, another zodiac, doesn't like it.  Hiro shows up and is rude and harrasses Tohru.  Hiro takes Tohru's wallet which has a picture of Tohru's mother in it.  Tohru follows Hiro to Kyo's Shishou's dojo to get the wallet back.  When Kyo finds out what Hiro did, even Kyo couldn't stop Hiro's attitude.  It wasn't until Kisa shows up and tells Hiro to not be mean to Tohru that Hiro stops.  Kisa asks Hiro to apologize to Tohru, and as a "punishment", Tohru gives Hiro a hug, which turns him into the ram.

Hiro hangs out with Kisa and in we see that Hiro really loves Kisa but can't express it.  During a convo between Hatori and Shigure, we find out that Hiro told Akito about his love toward Kisa, and Akito ended up beating on Kisa, which deters Hiro from getting too close to Kisa.  In turn, his frustration is the reason that he is aggressive with Tohru.  Tohru decides to take the two youngin's to the park and Hiro continues to show his attitude.  Despite his attitude, Tohru tells Hiro that he's amazing as a child of six-grade.  Kisa invites Tohru for future plans and that only made Hiro feel more rivalry toward Tohru.

Tohru and her friends are at the swimming pool and they think that Tohru should have a new swim suit.  Hanajima and Uochan go to the Sohma's to ask everyone to chip in the money.  At the store, the girls picked a swim suit for Tohru and gave it to her as a gift.  There are three delinquent girls who want to pick on Uochan.  Uo goes on to tell her story when she was a delinquent.  She used to look up to the Red Butterfly, an infamous delinquent.  She hears that Red Butterfly's daughter is her age so she went to look for her.  When she saw that Tohru was Red Butterfly's daughter, she was shocked because Tohru wasn't anything that she thought she would be.  Tohru took her home to meet her mother and ran into her while on their way home.

Uo was very disappointed that Red Butterfly turned out to be a "doting mother".  She went home to a very empty house where her father just drank.  One day she was beat up by other girls in another turf, and ran into Tohru.  Without a word, Tohru hid her in her house, took care of her injury, and fed her.  That's when Uo started to love Tohru and her mother.  The three delinquent girls who wanted to pick on Uo show up at the groups table and wanted to see Uo.

Uo ignores the girls as they continue to taunt her.  Uo thought back when Uo and Tohru started to become best friends at school, and people couldnt' believe it because they were so different.  Uo left her group of gang, and as a punishment, she had to be beat up.  Tohru's mother showed up in time and saved Uo from the gang and piggie backed Uo home.  During second year, the two girls met Hanajima and Tohru's mother treated them like her daughters.  Back to reality, the three girls were no match because Uo's arm is much longer than theirs.  Uo tells them that when they are ready to be scolded, go see her.  That changed the delinquent and turned them for the good.

The Yuki Fan Club is very worried about who the council members are because they do not want Tohru to be one.  The senior Makoto would do anything to prevent that from happening.  The present president would not tell the Fan Club who the council members are so Makoto sends Rika to go to the library with her to find out from the files.  When they were there, they see Yuki in the library.  During the conversation, Makoto says something that shows her bad side and runs out of the library.  Yuki follows and apologizes to her. She then decides to be a better person and refuses to give up on Yuki.   A pair of boy and girl walk by with their face covered and they both show interest in Yuki and Tohru. (I guess we'll have to find out who these two peopls are.)

Fruits Basket - Volume 8 (Chapter 43 - 48)

While the group was talking about what to do for their class trip, Momi shows up and tells them that Hatsuharu is causing trouble in his classroom.  They go to Haru and the teacher breaks up the argument between Haru and Kyo.  Haru had to stay in school to see the teacher and Yuki stays with him.  Haru tells Yuki that it's ok to call Tohru, Tohru, and not Honda-san.  Haru tells Yuki that he has been dumped by Rin and that's why he turned black.  Meanwhile, Tohru runs into Ritchan, who was apologizing to the books that she dropped on the ground.

Okami is Ritchan's mother (the concierge at the hotel from Volume 3).  Ritchan is also the monkey.  Ritchan apologizes to everything that happens, even when it has nothing to do with him.  When Ritchan broke a plate by accident and Tohru accidentally hugs him, he turns into a monkey.  Tohru was surprised because she thought Ritchan was a girl (beacuse he dresses and looks like a girl).  Ritchan is then found on the roof of the house, seemingly going to jump, but all his melodramatic talk was merely just talks.

Ritchan stays overnight and in the morning apologizes about everything to everyone.  Ritchan tells Tohru that he was a boy who his parents had to apologize to others for.  He then started dressing up as a girl as it calms him down.  He wants to stop wearing women's clothes but he doesn't have the confidence to.  Tohru makes him feel better by saying that he just needs to find his reason that he was born.  Yuki visits the main house to see Haru and Haru tells Yuki that he's not givingi up on Rin, yet.  Haru then again suggests that Yuki should call Tohru by her first name but Yuki is still not receptive to that.

As the group eats lunch at school talking about future plans, Uo and Hana think that Tohru should be with a guy who would support her, and the guy should be someone like Kyo and Yuki.  Kyo and Tohru talks about their future at night over noodles, and Kyo said that he can't inherit shishou's dojo because he's the cat.  The two share their anxiety about how they are going to do with their future, and Tohru realizes that Yuki was trying to tell her about it, also, before.  Shigure shows up and tells the two to just take one thing at a time.  Tohru goes to Yuki and tells him that she gets anxious, also.

Ayama shows up at Sohma's home with peaches.  In private, Shigure tells Tohru that peaches and crabs were what Yuki loved to eat when he was little.  Ayama tells Yuki that he would like to go to the parent-teacher conference.  He regrets not being there for Yuki when he was little but he's there now.  Ayame makes each person a shirt with embroidery.

Summer time has started and school is over.  To start the summre break, Momi wants to go to the haunted mansion and everyone goes with him.  Tohru is scared but wants to face her fears to overcome her fears, which didn't work out.  Haru changes the tune by telling a sad story about a ghost in the haunted house and ends up vandalizing the house.  Meanwhile, Hiro and Rin talks about not giving up on a certain person...

Arisa tells Tohru and others that she met a guy who is very much like Tohru at work.  The next time she sees him in the street, she runs to catch up to him to meet him.  They go eat lunch together and Kureno unintentionally offends her by saying that their meeting at her work was "pointless".  In an effort to apologize, Arisa reads his gesture as telling her that he loves her.  As Arisa wonders if she'll see him again, Kureno is welcomes back by Akito.

Ever since Hanajima was little, she's been treated like she has some kind of power.  At school, the kids picked on her and called her a witch.  One day, a boy fell down sick and Hanajima thought that he became ill all of the sudden because she wished him deach.  Because she was treated differently, she transferred to another school - Tohru's school.  Tohru accepted her like a friend and Hanajima soon made friends with Tohru and Arisa,   Hanajima thought that she is cursed and would hurt her new friends, but they convinced her that they love her and want her around.

Kyo takes Tohru to visit his shishou at his house and caught him "cooking".  Tohru takes over and cooks them a meal.  Before the meal was done, Kunimitsu Tomoda, Kazuma's student/personal secretary, tells Kazuma that Kyo's father called and wanted to see him.  At the meeting, Kyo's father tlles Kazuma that the cat needs to be confined in the dark room in the main house after his high school graduation.  Kazuma tells Kyo's father that Kyo's changing and that he'll protect Kyo if he has to.

Momiji plans for the group without consulting them again, and this time, they are going on a hisho vacation.  Before they go though, all of them needs to have their homework finished.  Yuki helps Tohru with her homework, and mentioned the hat that she has.  She tells him that the hat belongs to a boy who helped her one time when she was lost.  All of the sudden, during the conversation, a piece of wood broke through the window into her bedroom.  Rin shows up to Shigure and tells him that she wasn't the one who broke the glass, and asks him if he knew why she was there.  Meanwhile, we see Yuki thinking back as a little boy wearing that hat...

Rain Shelter of Terror: In one rainy summer day, the group decides to tell scray stories.  Some tries to protect Tohru's innocent ears as Hatsuharu tells a story about a guy drinking from a glass until he realized that there was a big cockroach in the glass.  They all blame Shigure for putting stories like that in his head.
