The Castle of Cagliostro
Hayao Miyazaki

The moment that the Castle of Cagliostro started showing on my TV, it looked like an old anime.  Five minutes into the anime, I realized that I saw it before somewhere, but I couldn't remember where and when I saw it, nor the what the story was really about.  I guess that alone says something about this anime: it was good enough that I remember part of it, but it wasn't that good for me to remember what it was about.  I just remembered scenes here and there.

This story is about a thief named Lupin who, with his partner, tries to pull off a job at the Castle of Cagliostro.  To make things worse for him, the Count who lives there is getting married and the security is high.  When Lupin sees a girl in a wedding dress being chased by a bunch of thugs, he got himself involved and saved her life from the dangerous chase.  However, she was recaptured and sent back to the castle.  Lupin finds out that the bride is the Count's fiancee, and the Count only wants the ring that tha the girl has in order to gain power over the entire country.  Lupin goes through a lot of obstacles to save the girl and later realizes that he remembers her from a long time ago.

I am normally a fan of Hayao Miyazaki, but I have to say that I am not that big of a fan of Lupin, the main character of this anime and other Lupin animes.  The humor in this movie was ok, but nothing major.  The drawing was just all right, to my taste, which is kind of surprising as, like I said, I normally like Miyazaki's work.

I've read others' reviews on this anime and most of them rave about how this is a classic, full of adventure and fun.  I think I can see that but perhaps my taste has grown over the years and I like something more "sophisticated" in this kind of storyline, which involves adventure, action and detective work.  Don't get me wrong; there are parts of the anime that I enjoyed very much, such as the car chase and the final battle against the evil Count.  I did like some of the dialogs between Lupin and his friend, but too bad most of the dialogs were not that clever.

All in all, this anime is enjoyable but not so much that I feel like I need to own a copy.  I suppose this is one of those animes that everyone seems to love but I just thought it was ok.  At least it's not like Neon Genesis Evangelion in which everyone loves and I totally hate.
