Immigrants/Citizenship Courses: In addition to the adult ESOL, CCACC occasionally offers training for citizenship interviews. These classes prepare citizenship applicants with background knowledge on U.S. history, U.S. Constitution, government systems, civic laws and customs, and possible questions from immigration officers. The coordinator for these classes is Margaret Poo at 301-365-1668.
History: Adult ESOL were established in 1988, initially under the joint sponsorship of ACAMP and CCACC. At the beginning, the classes were only for children of new immigrants and were later extended to adult immigrants. Since 1992, the adult English program has been run by CCACC exclusively. Over the past ten years, the program has witnessed significant growth. Initially, English teachers were all volunteers. In 2001, CCACC was awarded a government grant for the purpose of English instruction. It is now able to pay teachers a nominal wage to cover transportation and other expenses.
