The Cultural Arts School offers a variety of interesting Chinese culture classes for both children and adults. Among the classes offered are:
Chinese Calligraphy (書法)
Learn to write Chinese characters beautifully using a brush in the traditional way with Mr. Bing Huang (黃 秉 驥) in the Chinese Calligraphy class. Mr Huang is accomplished Chinese artist and calligraphy teacher. His work has been exhibited in many regional and international exhibitions, including the Florence Biennale (2007), the London Biennale (2013) and at the Mansion at Strathmore. His works of Chinese calligraphy adopts a Modernist style that combines traditional calligraphy techniques with Western abstract expressionism. As an artist, he is associated with a few local art clubs, is a past president of the International Artists Support Group (2002 -2003) and the Washington Chinese Literary Society (2008-2009). He volunteers regularly by giving calligraphy demonstrations at local arts festivals or during Chinese New Year celebrations. Mr. Huang is also active in community service. He is a board member of Rockville Sister Cities Corp. and Chinese Culture and Community Service Center (CCACC).
Chinese Arts and Crafts (中華美勞藝術)
Enjoy creating handicrafts such as greeting cards, flour figurines, bracelets and other decorative items using different materials.
Chinese Opera Martial Arts (中國初級功夫,中國平劇功夫)
The Chinese Opera Martial Arts class is taught by Mr. Chusan Zhu (朱楚善). Mr. Zhu has dedicated his career to promoting Chinese traditional performing arts in the US since 1987. He is the director of Washington Chu Shan Chinese Opera Institute, which he established in 1991. He is the 4th generation of a family of Chinese opera artists who learned his art from from an early age. He trained at the Shanghai College of Traditional Opera, the Shanghai Institute for the Performing Arts, and the Chinese Center for Film and Television. He has directed a wide repertoire of over 80 operas in the US, both traditional and modern, which include the Monkey King, Farewell to My Concubine, adaptation of Hamlet, Saga of the Red lantern, and Gift of Pearl at Rainbow Bridge. In addition to the Chinese opera martial arts class, Mr. Zhu also teaches Chinese Drum and Dragon Dance as a part of the Language Class curriculum. Students will learn basic martial arts skills and put on performances during the school year and at Chinese New Year celebrations.
Chinese Folk Dance (民族舞蹈)

Our Folk Dance Class is under the direction of Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe (FCDT) founder, Mrs. Chin Siu-Lee Choi and her daughters, Stella and Amy (both graduates of RCS). RCS is fortunate to have such a talented team of dance instructors who have received numerous artistic and choreography awards, as well as regional and international performing experience. RCS students enrolled in the Folk Dance Class learn one choreographed dance routine per semester. Wearing traditional dance costumes, students perform the Fall semester routine at Lake Forest Mall in celebration of Chinese New Year, and the Spring semester routine on the main stage at Churchill HS during closing ceremony at the end of the school year. No prior dance experience necessary. Minimum age requirement is 5 years old.
