Q & A About Rockville Chinese School

WHAT AGES OF CHILDREN ATTEND RCS?  Children from preschool through high school attend Rockville Chinese School.

WHAT KIND OF CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE AT RCS?  On Sunday mornings, RCS offers classes in Mandarin Chinese for a variety of levels of proficiency, from beginner to experienced speaker.  In the afternoon, RCS' Cultural Arts School offers many different kinds of classes, such as music, dance, sports, & arts & crafts.

WHAT CLASSES ARE THERE FOR STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HEAR CHINESE AT HOME?  RCS offers several levels of conversation classes in Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers, from preschoolers through high schoolers.  In these classes, Chinese pronunciation is taught using the pinyin system (see below).  These language classes are in the morning.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE CHINESE TO GO TO ROCKVILLE CHINESE SCHOOL?  No! RCS welcomes everyone who wishes to learn about Chinese language and culture.  We have several adults & children enrolled who are from non-Chinese backgrounds.  All you need is a curious mind & a desire to learn!

ARE THERE ANY ADOPTED CHILDREN FROM CHINA AT RCS?  Yes!  There are several adopted children of a wide variety of ages.  Children adopted from China into non-Chinese speaking families can be enrolled in pinyin class (see below).  Parents can take Mandarin Chinese for adults, which is also taught using the pinyin system.  This way, the entire family can be involved in learning Chinese.  There are also many fun afternoon classes for children in RCS' Cultural Arts School that help children to enjoy learning about Chinese culture.

WHAT IS PINYIN?  Pinyin is a system using the letters of the English alphabet to represent the pronunciation of Chinese words.  Pinyin is a tool to help students learn to speak Chinese.  Many RCS classes use pinyin to help students learn Chinese pronunciation.
